The chakra system has been at the heart of most eastern philosophies, belief systems and healthcare practices for many thousands of yearst.

A chakra is a spinning vortex of energy.

Every human being has 7 major chakras and many hundreds of minor ones. Together, they are the network through which mind, body and spirit interact as one holistic system.

They begin at the top of the head and proceed to the base of the spine.

A chakra is a spinning vortex of energy. A human being's energy field is complex and multi-layered, and includes subtle energies which western science has only recently begun to detect. chakras are the energetic gateways through which our various subtle energies interflow. Like electricity, chakras are invisible to the naked eye.

Every human being has 7 major chakras and many hundreds of minor ones. Together, they are the network through which mind, body and spirit interact as one holistic system.

Each chakra represents an aspect of consciousness vital to our lives (safety, sexuality, power, love, communication, intuition and self realisation). Physiologically, each chakra is connected to physical organs and endocrine glands, the health functions of which are directly affected by the state of the corresponding chakra.

We can think of the chakras as energetic floppy disks, each containing vital programmes influencing the various aspects of our lives. Some of our programming may be positive, affecting our health, emotions, thoughts and behaviour in a positive manner; others may be negative, having the reverse effect.

CROWN CHAKRA

The crown chakra is located at the top of the head and the quality of its energy is symbolised by thought - a vibration of infinite speed. The crown chakra is primarily associated with our spirituality as it is the gateway to higher realms of consciousness. Physiologically, it governs the brain and central nervous system and is associated with the pituitary gland.

The music which stimulates the crown chakra resonates with the frequency of the colour violet and is of such a high vibration as to be almost transcendental in nature. Dancing to the frequency of the crown chakra is like experiencing a waking dream, a moving meditation. It can lead to varying degrees of spiritual awakening and often brings about a numinous quality, characteristic of most spiritual experiences. Through dance one is able to embody one's highest spiritual energy, achieving a deeper connection with both.

THIRD EYE CHAKRA

The third eye chakra is located in the centre of the forehead and the quality of its energy is symbolised by light - a higher, faster and finer vibration than sound. Concerned with our intuition and imagination, it is from here that we are able to visualise, receive dream images, re-call memories and develop psychic abilities. It is the home of the sixth sense. The third eye chakra governs the physical eyes and the pineal gland.

The music which stimulates the third eye chakra resonates with the frequency of the colour indigo and is of such a high vibrational frequency that it is almost trance inducing in its effects. Using dance to go into a trance-like state opens one up to the inner visions of imagination, intuition and insight. Through guided exploration of this chakra, one can gain insights on dreams, tap into psychic abilities and work with visualisations. The powerful capabilities of the third eye experienced through dance can then be used to directly influence our daily lives.

THROAT CHAKRA

The throat chakra is located in the throat area and the quality of its energy is represented by the non-physical element of ether - the subtle vibrational field that is all around us. Sound can also be correlated to this chakra as sound is the representation of an invisible field of vibrations. The throat chakra is primarily associated with all aspects of communication - self expression, listening and expression of creativity. It governs the throat, neck and vocal cords and is associated with the thyroid and parathyroid glands.

The music which stimulates the throat chakra resonates with the colour blue and is ethereal in quality. Dancing to this higher frequency enables one to sense and experience one's own etheric energy field. Through guided exploration, movement is used to reveal and express inner truths, ignite creative energy, and experiment with various forms of self-expression and communication.

HEART CHAKRA

The heart chakra is located at the centre of the chest and the quality of its energy is symbolised by the element of air - gentle, expansive, spacious. As the mid-point in the system of 7 chakras the heart chakra unites our physical existence with our spiritual existence. It is therefore concerned with uniting and balancing the opposite energies existing within us. The qualities and issues relating to this chakra are unconditional love, forgiveness, compassion and ultimately healing. The heart chakra governs the heart, lungs, thymus gland and influences the circulatory system.

The music which stimulates the heart chakra resonates with the frequency of the colour green and has an expansive and uplifting quality. As this music touches the heart it calls the body to move in a gentle and expansive way. Through the use of movement and breath work the heart chakra is activated and the healing qualities of unconditional love, compassion and self acceptance are explored. Through dance we can contribute to the work of balancing our opposite energies by experimenting with our extrovert and introvert natures, our passive and aggressive behaviours, our light and dark sides etc. Expressing these energies in a physical way can heighten our awareness of how balanced or imbalanced our current behaviours, attitudes and patterns are.

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

The solar plexus chakra is located just below the sternum and the quality of its energy is represented by the element of fire - heat, energy, transforming. This chakra deals with issues such as personal empowerment, will-power, and the regulation and distribution of metabolic energy through the body. It also governs our digestive system and muscles and is associated with the pancreas.

The music which stimulates the solar plexus chakra resonates with the frequency of the colour yellow and is fast and energetic . As one explodes into a fiery and dynamic dance, the entire system is energised, enabling one to feel confident and purposeful. Through guided exploration of this chakra one can break through inertia, connect with one's own inner power, and strengthen drive and will. Having experienced this energy through dance, one can begin to integrate it in to everyday life.

SACRAL CHAKRA

The sacral chakra is located around one inch below the navel and the quality of its energy is represented by the element of water - fluid, formless, movement. It primarily deals with our emotions and sexuality. Physiologically the sacral chakra governs the sexual organs, urinary elimination and the reproductive system. It is associated with the gonads gland.

The music which stimulates the sacral chakra resonates with the frequency of the colour orange and is fluid and flowing in rhythm. As one flows deep into dance, emotional energy is released and expressed through movement. Allowing sadness, anger, joy etc. to move through the body can be a very cathartic experience. Through dance, we can explore this chakra further and work with its direct expression - sexuality. Allowing one's own sexual energy to flow through the body and be expressed through movement is a safe way to explore how one really feels with this energy.

BASE CHAKRA

The base chakra is located at the base of the spine and the quality of its energy is represented by the element of earth - solid, dense, secure. It is associated with our physical health, survival issues (eg work, money, housing), family relationships and instinctual energy. Physiologically, the base chakra governs our legs, feet, bones, teeth and large intestine. It is also associated with our adrenal glands - the fight or flight mechanism within us all.

The music which stimulates the base chakra resonates with the frequency of the colour red and is found in the low vibrations of earthy, tribal-like music. Throughout the dance, one's feet tend to naturally pound the ground which leads to being energetically present in the body. Through guided exploration of this chakra one can invoke a deeper connection with this primal base energy, become more conscious of ancestral patterns and re-connect with animal instincts.
