Dance from the inside out – A CHAKRADANCE™ experience.
When was the last time you danced with a relative
that had passed over, soared through the sky
as a white eagle or imagined you were a serpent
moving swiftly across earth? These and many
similar experiences are part of what people
encounter when they participate in the CHAKRADANCE™ healing
dance practice, a spirited and playful dance
journey through the chakra system. Using spontaneous
movement and specific music that resonates
to each of the seven major chakras, CHAKRADANCE™ is
a non-verbal, non-rational, creative process
that accesses the deepest recesses of your
psyche. Through the dance, you give outward
expression to figures and landscapes that emerge
from your inner world that have the effect
of facilitating a profound psychological renewal.
It is a magical and transformative experience
as the energy of the chakras move through you
in your dance and activates the body’s
natural healing abilities.
Developed by Natalie Southgate in 1998, CHAKRADANCE™ is
a spontaneous form of dance that draws on a
fusion of philosophies and musical styles.
It aims to balance the chakras – the
energy centres that, in Eastern tradition,
are the gateways to integrating mind, body
and spirit. With a 15 year-long background
in dance and extensive qualifications in psychology,
CHAKRADANCE™ came to Southgate as a natural
way to blend these two areas of her talent
and passion: healing and movement.
In CHAKRADANCE™ you enter into a candlelit
room that has a womblike feel. Within this
safe and protected space an organic unfolding
takes place as you are given the opportunity
to move freely and create whatever dance you
wish. There is no confrontation, intellectualisation
or interpretation of your dance. Instead, you
are immersed in a deeply personal and introverted
journey where there are no rules or ‘right’ way
to play. Dancing with your eyes closed, you
give physical expression to impulses that emerge
deep from within your psyche. In the darkness,
people seem to easily lose any inhibitions.
Their bodies move freely to the music as they
glide around the room as though in their bedroom
and no one is watching. Flame lit silhouettes
move with the grace of jungle animals while
trying to re-connect with their animalistic
instincts in the base chakra for example, or
in the sacral chakra, people spiral their arms
above their head and thrusts their hips like
a belly dancer. In another dance someone on
all fours crawls around the room like a lizard
weaving between fellow dancers, some of which
are swaying side to side, others dancing as
though in a nightclub. It is a truly liberating
experience.
No matter what age, sex or level of fitness
you are, if you want to de-stress, explore
your energy centres and get fit at the same
time, CHAKRADANCE™ is for you. It is
not about performance in any way; you do CHAKRADANCE™ for
yourself. It offers a space to unwind and get
in touch with your rich inner life stimulating
your imagination and senses.
