Move over downward dog
Yoga introduced the idea
of working out more than just our muscles, now
meet CHAKRADANCE™,
another way to exercise and also gain benefits
for the mind and spirit. This newly developed
form of exercise involves spontaneous dance and
movement that is chosen for its vibrational frequency.
Taught in a nine-week cycle, classes work to
clear energetic blockages in the seven energy
centres, or ‘chakras’, that are aligned
along the spine.

Energy Boost
Indian tradition states that the human body has
seven chakras, and that keeping them balanced
promotes wellbeing. In a modern twist, the world’s
first CHAKRADANCE™ CD (devised by Sydney-born
dance teacher Natalie Southgate, 36) encourages
people to harmonise their chakras through improvised
movement. A quick listen to the seven fast-paced
tracks (one for each chakra) left me feeling
motivated.

Club Chakra
A new form of holistic dance workshop created
by Australian dancer Natalie Southgate means
you can get down and get healthy. Chakradance
has been described as the ‘sister to yoga’ and,
as well as being a lot of fun, the three hours
of vigorous movement is a great workout. Classes
are lit by candles, incense is burned and the
music is beautiful, so it really feels like a
sacred space, and there’s plenty of time
for meditation. The classes are all about free
expression, so you don’t have to learn
any steps – just surrender to the sound.
Each workshop focuses on the frequency of one
of the body’s seven chakras, which are
believed to be the gateways to integrating mind,
body and soul. For more info about workshops,
which cost around $50, visit www. chakradance.com.
