| Chakradance |
Chakradance is a modern day practice, but its roots lie in ancient wisdom discovered 4000 years ago through the chakra system.
The role of the chakra system is to help regulate the human energy field, commonly known as the aura. The aura is a dynamic, energetic matrix, which includes the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our being. Just as blood pulses through our veins and arteries, there is an energy that surges through not only our bodies, but into our energy field beyond the body. Every human being has seven major chakras and each one influences an aspect of our lives. From our instincts, sexuality and personal power through to how we love, communicate, use our intuition and connect to our deepest source of spirituality.
When we 'dance' each chakra, we are not only dancing our own individual history and bloodline ancestry, we're also dancing the global ancestry of the planet. Our experiences are deeply personal, yet at the same time we tap into the collective heights and depths of human experience. |

Base Chakra – The Dance of Mother Earth
The dance of the base chakra draws inspiration from tribal dancing, as found in the indigenous cultures of Africa, Australia and North America. These dances are linked to one’s roots, survival and grounding. In Chakradance we envisage dancing around an ancient campfire, bringing our own tribal dance to life. We also draw inspiration from the natural movements found in the animal kingdom. Shamans believe that animals can teach humans the power of instinctual energy and animal dances are deeply entrenched in shamanic ritual. A tiger, a snake, a dragon may join you – all animals whose energy corresponds to the base chakra energies. “The first time I danced the base chakra it was very, very tribal. I was stamping my feet and shaking my hands. It was like I was in a corroboree. Ancestors surrounded me, and a circle of wise women, and in the middle of the circle was a raging fire. It was strong, and fierce, and I felt I could manifest anything. And through this dance of the base chakra I learned about survival – my own, through taking care of my body. That to be physical is to be spiritual. And the dance of the base chakra gave me understanding of all those survival issues – especially my experience as a mother, and my instinct to protect my child.” Jacki |

Sacral Chakra – The Dance of Sensuality
The dance of the sacral chakra often relates to the feminine dances found in the Middle East, South America and Hawaii. Dances from these regions celebrate many of the qualities associated with the sacral, including emotions and sexuality. This sacral dance can be slow and sensual, or flirtatious and erotic, with fluid movements of the hips and belly. Through this dance, the dancer can transform into a gypsy, a belly dancer, an ancient goddess, as he or she surrenders to the serpentine movements of the feminine. In this sensual dance the connecting force of Eros is evoked, and it’s energy infuses throughout our bodies. “As I was moving into the dance of the sacral chakra, deeper and deeper, I felt as though I was underwater. I began to sweat, and so much energy was pouring from my sacral chakra. It felt like a lightening bolt had hit me, like God had struck my sacral chakra with this bolt to reveal and unblock so much of my sensual, feminine energy. I am a survivor of child abuse, and this experience began the process of healing. After this dance, I began to express my sexuality, and sensuality, and began to heal the trauma of my childhood, which had been blocked and stored in my sacral chakra. I had this profound experience of going underwater, and discovering my hidden self, my shadow, and bringing her to the surface, to the light, for healing. In the days following the dance, I had many dreams, and tears, and clearing. It was not always easy, but dancing the sacral chakra brought light to my shadow, and began the process of allowing sensual and sexual love into my life.” Rebecca |

Solar Plexus Chakra – The Dance of Power
To dance the solar plexus chakra is to call on the warrior dances of the Maori, ancient Morocco , Spain , Mexico , Brazil . These warrior dances were masculine, powerful, athletic and virile, as they rhythmically mimicked the art of the fight. In Chakradance, fast dynamic movements ignite the fire in our belly, fuelling our dance with energy and strength. Reining all this fiery energy in, movements then become strong, purposeful and clearly defined as our inner warrior emerges triumphant, brave and strong “When I danced the solar plexus, I felt like a golden volcano had erupted in my solar plexus, pouring its energy through my whole body. My hands were like fire hoses, shooting forth this golden energy … It was like my whole aura was being painted from the inside out with the beautiful golden yellow energy. Once it started, it was as if a dam had burst. I danced from my solar plexus, and my hands were pointed outward, and I felt very grounded, exceptionally athletic, and my upper torso felt strong, and powerful, and I felt full of self-expression. I was able to truly revel in my selfhood, in my masculinity and in my essence. Immediately after dancing the solar plexus my sleep improved, and I felt like I had been energetically exercised. I felt renewed. It was extremely potent and it fueled my motivation to be all that I can be. Who I truly am.” Nick |

Heart Chakra – The Dance of Love
To dance the heart chakra is to move with lightness, joy and compassion, as reflected in dances from ancient Spain, Egypt and China. Many of these dances used exaggerated arm movements to gently whirl into deep states of joyful harmony. Other dances of China symbolized balance, where mimetic movements expressed the union of heaven and earth. We’ve draw inspiration from these dances, and move the arms to feel uplifted, light and free. Inspired by the whirling of the ancient ones, we dance a soaring journey of love, compassion and joy. “Before I danced the heart chakra, I felt really shut up. My body was closed in on itself, and I walked around holding myself in, my shoulders hunched over and my chest area protected. When I started the dance, I had a really strong reaction, and at first I really struggled with the music. It had obviously stirred something up! The more I allowed my breath and my arm movements to soften and open, the more I started tapping into the grief I was holding on to in my heart. I have lost a loved one and somehow dancing the heart chakra I was able to see my friend, and was able to let her go, and of the pain around the situation. It’s almost impossible to explain, but I walk differently now, my shoulders are back and I stand straight and strong. I don’t need to protect my heart chakra anymore. I’m no longer hurt.” Amanda |

Throat Chakra – The Dance of Expression
The movements of the throat chakra have been inspired by many ancient dances. So many cultures all over the planet interweave the voice and dance to increase the awareness of spirit. The Greek word horus refers to both dance and song, and is the origin of the word chorus. In Ancient Egypt, performers often danced while reciting poetry, while in Hawaii, chant and dance are blended to communicate the story. In Tibetan culture, mystical rituals performed by monks interweave chanting and sound (gyaling horns, cymbals and bells), with delicate movements of the body. In Chakradance, we weave sound and movement in a ‘mantra-dance’ which intensifies our self- expression and creativity. “I found the throat chakra to be the most powerful dance of them all. I had suppressed myself, and my voice, and my creativity for a very long time. I was the kind of person who had never sang in front of other people, and I didn’t speak up for myself. When I got to the throat chakra, I experienced a lot of throat clearing – literally feeling like it was very gluggy, full of debris, and I almost felt like I was suffocating. So I started clearing and clearing my throat, and gradually I could feel it becoming free. Then I began to purr, and as I purred, like a lion, I realized my throat felt like it was expanding, and I began to chant. I had a very suppressive childhood, and it wasn’t safe to speak up for myself … now I do speak up for myself. My friends have noticed, and they’ve even said, what’s going on, you’re so vibrant and strong. For me, the throat chakra has really helped me experience and express my creativity – I’ve started writing and painting. Because of my throat chakra clearing, I’ve blossomed, creatively and personally.” Cinzia |

Third Eye Chakra – The Dance of Intuition
At the third eye chakra, we can lift up into ecstatic and altered states of consciousness through trance-dance. The practice of trance-dance is hugely popular throughout the world, and has its heritage in many of the ancient cultures of South East Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. Often dancers are inspired by imagining they are a North Amerian Indian, who has danced for days, in order to go deeply into trance. The movements tend to be simple, repetitive, even monotonous. The dance of the third eye is the dance of the intuitive mind. Each dancer drifts into his or her own visual universe of images, colours, and insights, achieving a deeply meditative state. “As the music for the third eye chakra started, pictures began to flood in, literally pouring through. I would be running through rainforests, dancing round fire, just bang, bang, bang – one image after the other. Then I saw my boyfriend and I. He was standing in our kitchen, and I ran towards him and jumped into his arms. Two large, beautiful wings unfolded from him, and he took me in his arms and we flew up into the sky. We flew through clouds, and over peaks of mountains. He held me so tightly, and I felt so protected and safe. We landed on a mountain top, surrounded by clouds, and my wings unfolded. Our wings wrapped around each other, and I felt such love and peace. Afterwards, I went home and told him about my vision, and we smiled. We had been through some tough times as a couple, and this vision, this dance, confirmed our relationship’s beauty and purpose. Now I am not scared of my intuition, or of what it will reveal to me through visions. Before, I thought I might see something ‘bad’. Now I know I don’t need to run away from these experiences and visions. My experience was so beautiful, I was elated and happy for weeks. I couldn’t stop smiling!” Fiona |

Crown Chakra – The Dance of the Soul
The dance of the crown chakra is a devotional dance, one in a long line of dances that embrace the religious and the spiritual. In ancient Shamanic practice, from the Celts to the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Asia, dance was used to commune with the spirits. In Ancient Egypt certain ritual dances were crucial to the successful outcome of religious rites. In Chakradance we open the gateway to the soul through this meditative sacred dance. The dance of the crown chakra is the most paradoxical of all the dances: it is the dance of stillness. Often there will be little physical movement visible to any observer. The dance is internal – for now it is the soul’s turn to dance. “When I started dancing the crown chakra, I tried to ‘perform’, to dance well. But every time I tried to dance ‘better’ I felt a stronger force pushing me down to the floor. After continually getting up, then being gently pushed back down again, I got the message and stayed on the floor. Then I heard a voice say ‘just be still’. I realized that by trying to get up and dance I was trying to force things – a pattern in my life. I make myself so busy in my day-to-day life with my perfectionism, that I close myself off from the messages from the one source that knows what is right for me – my soul. As I danced the crown chakra I clearly felt a presence, and I was so blissful that I wanted to go home, but it was not my time. As I received this message, I felt my face being cupped by a loving presence, or God. I am a very willful person, and since that time, I am more willing to trust the guidance I get. Mind you, it’s not always easy following divine guidance – sometimes I think, why can’t I just stay home and watch TV! But my crown chakra experiences have led me to follow my purpose with less struggle, and while I feel truly connected to the divine, I also feel so much more comfortable in my own skin, in my body, with who I really am.” Judy |
